A New Home
Welcome to the new home for The Chinese Cinema. This is a project that began life almost ten years ago, when I was so smitten with Sammo Hung that I started a deep dive into Hong Kong cinema called the "Summer of Sammo." That fall it morphed into an ostensibly Johnnie To-related project called "Running Out of Karma." After a couple of years, and only a handful of Johnnie To reviews but more than a hundred reviews on films by other Chinese language filmmakers, I moved the whole thing to Medium, ripped off Andrew Sarris's organizational structure, and renamed it "The Chinese Cinema."
But after five years at Medium, and for a variety of reasons, I'm switching platforms again. I'm keeping the name this time though. The new site here has the clean, text-centric appearance I liked at Medium, but is much more robust and customizable. It's going to take awhile to migrate all the old stuff over here and get it all formatted and tagged properly, but once I do it should all look a lot better (I'll finally have footnotes the way I like them, for one thing).
However, the new site isn't free, and so I'm offering subscriptions to help with the cost. All the old reviews will remain free--it'd be impossible to remove them all from the various sites they currently live on anyway. But almost all of the new writing I do–full reviews, essays, etc–will be behind a modest paywall. You can subscribe for $1/month or $10/year. Just click the subscribe button and please don't hesitate to let me know if there are any problems or if you have any questions or suggestions.
